GOODNESS in Munich:
a jewellery and fashion collaboration between Aotearoa New Zealand and the Modeschule München. Sendlingertorplatz 14, 80331 München, Germany, 14 and 15 March 2025
In Munich, 26 capes—crafted by students at the Meisterschule für Mode/Design—were paired with jewellery from 27 artists from Aotearoa New Zealand.
These capes, made from neutral-coloured calico, are the first project fashion students undertake when they begin their studies. During a visit to the school in 2024, Karl Fritsch saw their potential as an ideal vessel for jewellery, sparking this collaboration.
The jewellery pieces, created over the past twenty years, reflect a diversity of ideas and materials. While some artists are well-established, all works share a cultural dialogue, intertwining tradition, innovation, and personal narratives.
In Munich, the capes framed and complemented the jewellery, creating a dynamic interplay between body and ornament.
In Nelson, the jewellery stood alone, presented without the capes. Instead, paintings by Karl Fritsch and Lisa Walker adorned the walls, subtly referencing the Munich collaboration. Their works acted as a visual bridge, maintaining the connection between the two exhibitions while allowing the jewellery to take centre stage.
In both contexts, GOODNESS sought to explore the synergy between materials, form, and meaning—where garment and jewellery search for the perfect harmony, the elusive magic that makes them extraordinary.
