IWA : NZ Makers at the FRAME galleries, IHM, Munich 2018 (07-13 March 2018)
Curator: Peter Deckers
Organisation: Makers101

The exhibition Iwa showcased nine perspectives in contemporary jewellery from New Zealand spanning four decades. This collection was presented at Munich Jewellery Week 2018 and highlighted how these practices relate to each other and contributed to the transforming field of jewellery making. Each artist follows their own unique path, drawing on narrative, materiality, history, and geographic location.

The exhibition featured the work of Alan Preston, known for celebrating materials, techniques, and indigenous mark-making of New Zealand, alongside Vanessa Arthur, whose work explores urban mark-making and cast objects in oxidized silver. Jane Dodd’s narrative-based work, inspired by historical sculpture and jewellery-making, contrasts with the works of Moniek Schrijer, Lisa Walker, and Joe Sheehan, who incorporated recognisable images and everyday objects using different material processes. Similarly, Warwick Freeman, Shelley Norton, and Karl Fritsch each draw on distinct material sources to inform their work, striking a balance in transforming matter into art.

This diverse collection represents the complexity and depth of current jewellery practice in Aotearoa, New Zealand, serving as an introduction to a wider artistic conversation across generations.
